When in doubt, do without

When I was younger, my mom taught me a little phrase that stuck with me: "when in doubt, do without."  It's amazing how often this little phrase applies to real life.  How does it apply to budgeting? Well, in general I have found when I'm debating with myself about a purchase, chances are that I don't need it and I just want it.  For example, I don't really debate about whether or not to pay my electric bill.  But I may not be sure if I should buy a new laptop right now.  "When in doubt, do without:" with this in mind, I don't buy it.  (Well, that's the idea anyway, it doesn't always work out that way because I'm still working on my self-dicipline.)
